Helen Louise Copeland (Melzer)

96, formerly of Cass City, died Thursday, January 14, 2021 in her home in Bluffton, SC. She was born February 3, 1924 in Bach to Ludwig and Mary Melzer. She married Harold Copeland on September 29, 1941. He died May 19, 2000. She later married Donald Carlile in 2003. He died in 2019.

Helen was a farm wife and loved flowers, especially roses. She was a test grower for Jackson Perkins for several years. Following her time on the farm, she was employed for over eighteen years by Hills & Dales General Hospital of Cass City, in the medical records department. After retiring, Helen and Harold enjoyed spending winters in Florida. Later, Helen and Donald married and they enjoyed several years together. Helen’s hobbies included crafting and baking. She attended Shabbona United Methodist Church and loved making pies there for many years.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Robert) Atkins of Bluffton, SC; granddaughters: Shawn (Michael) Johnston of Waxhaw, NC; Suzanne (Robert) Stickle of Bluffton, SC; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Naomi Holcomb of Lake Orion. She is preceded in death by her infant daughter, Judy; five sisters, and a brother.

A graveside committal service will be held at a later date in the spring with interment in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City. Family and friends may share memories, prayers, and stories with the family at
