ROBERT JOSEPH HIRN,
73, of Cass City died following a long illness Wednesday, October 28, 2015 in United Hospice of Marlette Residence Center, Marlette. He was born March 20, 1942 in Detroit to Francis and Marguerite (Weldon) Hirn. He married Mary Ann Spiekerman August 22, 1964 in St. Pancratius Catholic Church.
Bob graduated from Central Michigan University in 1964 where he studied Industrial Arts and Biology. He moved to Cass City taking a job teaching Biology at Cass City High School. Bob also worked for the school district as a substitute bus driver and coach. After five years of teaching Bob became the co-owner and manager of Caro Building Center, a business he owned and operated until his retirement. Bob was a member of Progressive Affiliated Lumberman. Bob served as the Chairman of the Board of Tuscola County Medical Care Facility for about 16 years, Vice President of the Rawson Memorial Library Board for 15 years, Pinney Foundation board member, Historical Society member, Thumb 2 Cylinder Club member, Thumb Area Antique Auto Club member, and Caro Old Engine Club member. He was also a member of Cass City School Board for 8 years and ISD board member. Bob was chosen as Cass City Citizen of the Year in 2005 and Tuscola County Shining Stars in 2009.
Bob is a longtime member of Friends of the Octagon Barn and has served on its board for many years, including two years as President. He started the Fall Family Days event and served as its Chairman for 17 years. The Thumb Octagon Barn held a special place in Bob's heart. He gave many hours to its restoration and development of the Agricultural Museum. Bob enjoyed woodworking and used his talent to build his home and for many projects at the barn. He also loved restoring antique tractors and automobiles. Bob was a longtime member of St. Pancratius Catholic Church, serving as Finance Chairman, lector and communion assistant. He was a member of Cass City Gagetown Knights of Columbus Council #8892 and the Cass City Gavel Club.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; children: MAJ Lisa Hirn, U.S. Army, of Vine Grove, KY, Mark (Diana) Hirn of New Baltimore; grandchildren: Katelyn and Tyler; sisters: Gail Cooper of Milford, Margaret (Rob) Bienenstein of Grosse Ile; brothers: David (Chun) Hirn of North Pole, AK, Brian (Cheryl) Hirn of Saginaw; several nieces and nephews. Bob is preceded in death by his son, Paul; parents, Francis and Marguerite Hirn; in-laws, Harvey and Mildred Spiekerman.
Funeral service held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 31, 2015 in Our Lady Consolata Parish, St. Pancratius Catholic Church with Rev. Christian Tabares officiating. Interment will take place in Novesta Township Cemetery, Cass City. Pallbearers for Mr. Hirn: Doug Monroe, Dennis Anderson, Mike Henschell, Tom Herron, Scott Wolfington, Kirk Winter, Martin Kubacki, Larry McCreedy, Greg Morris, Arthur Severance, Bill Klinkman and Stuart Venema. Memorials may be made to United Hospice of Marlette Residence Center, Thumb Octagon Barn, Our Lady Consolata Parish, Tuscola County Medical Care Facility, Rawson Memorial Library or U of M ALS Clinic.
