JOSEPH EDWARD MELLENDORF

     Joseph E. Mellendorf, 85, of Caro, died unexpectedly on January 19, 2026 in his home. He was born August 18, 1940 in Gagetown to Stanley and Erma (Hartwick) Mellendorf. He married Sharon Sue Amspaugh in 1963.

     Joe was raised in Owendale with seven brothers, three sisters, many nephews, nieces, cousins, and more. He received his bachelor's degree in physical education and kinesiology from Bethel College, Mishawaka, Indiana; and Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana. Joe taught physical education for a few years; but eventually started his own business, Canboro Road Insulation, insulating homes throughout Tuscola and Huron counties. He was a long-time member of Deford Community Church. Joe was also a lifelong, loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions. He could watch a game on the tv and listen to a different game on the radio! Joe enjoyed trips in the summer months to Fort Wayne and Kentucky to see Sharon’s side of the family. Over the years, he loved his dogs: Kelly, Flood, and Max.

     Joe is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters: Naomi Mellendorf, Esther Mellendorf.  Funeral service held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2026 in Deford Community Church, 1392 Kingston Rd., Deford, Michigan with Pastor David Cooper officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial and graveside service in Grant Township Cemetery in the spring.
