KIRT LESLIE MERCHANT

     Kirt L. Merchant, 53, of Gaylord, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, September 24, 2026. He was born March 10, 1973, in Cass City to Donald Larry and Judy Ann (Nicholas) Merchant. He married his loving wife, Anna Mary (Walchak) Merchant, on February 24, 2002, in Jackson.

     Kirt graduated from Cass City High School in 1991. He received an associate degree in agriculture from Michigan State University and continued his education at Northwestern College in Lima, Ohio, where he obtained certification as a diesel mechanic. Before relocating to the Gaylord area for work, he was employed by International in Jackson.

     Kirt had a deep love for the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, riding snowmobiles and motorcycles, and spending time on the farm. His love of farming was a special part of who he was. He enjoyed the hard work, the land, and the satisfaction that came from getting things done. If you knew Kirt, you know he definitely had opinions about picking rocks. Regardless, he loved being out on the land and taking pride in the work he accomplished. Whether he was working around the farm, fixing something in the garage, or taking on a home project, Kirt was happiest when he had something to do. He was known for always keeping himself busy, particularly with garage projects and working on cars. He had a natural ability to fix things and took great pride in figuring out how things worked and making them run again.

     Kirt and Anna also treasured the quieter moments of life together. They enjoyed taking walks by the river, enjoying the outdoors, and simply spending time together. Some of their happiest moments were the simple ones—being outside, taking a walk, coming home, and relaxing together. After a busy day, Kirt was just as content being at home with Anna, enjoying the comfort of their life together. Those peaceful moments were a special part of the life they built together over their years of marriage.

     Above all, Kirt’s pride and joy was his daughter, Katie. She was the light of his life, and he was incredibly proud of her and all that she accomplished. Her education was especially important to him. Kirt always encouraged Katie to put school first and was proud to support her every step of the way. Her accomplishments meant the world to him, and he never missed an opportunity to let her know how proud he was.

     Some of Kirt and Katie’s best memories were made during their simple, everyday adventures together. Saturdays often meant getting in the car and driving around to different car dealerships just to look at cars, and enjoy each other’s company. It wasn’t about buying anything or ever having a destination—it was about the time they spent together. Those Saturday drives, along with their spontaneous day trips, became special memories that Katie will carry with her always.  Kirt treasured his time with Katie and found so much happiness in watching her grow into the person she became. He was not only her father, but also one of her biggest supporters, and his love and pride for her were evident to everyone who knew him.

     Kirt is survived by his loving wife, Anna; his daughter and pride and joy, Katie (Andrew) Zielinski of Mt. Pleasant; and his brother, Mark Merchant of Bay City. He was preceded in death by his parents, D. Larry and Judy Ann Merchant; and his grandparents, Clarence and Maxine (DeLong) Merchant.

     A private family service was held in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City. Sam Leppert, Funeral Celebrant, officiated with interment in Elkland Township Cemetery.
