MELVIN JOSEPH HOPPE
Melvin J. Hoppe, 86, of Cass City, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away, with family by his side, on Friday, January 30, 2026 in Huron Medical Care Facility following a lengthy battle with dementia. He was born April 10, 1939 in Roseville, Michigan to Norman and Florence (Fitzgerald) Hoppe. He married Alicia Deluna on August 19, 1967 in St. Pancratius Catholic Church, Cass City. She died September 7, 2023.
Melvin graduated from Cass City High School in 1958. He had intentions on becoming a priest, but changed his career path. Melvin was employed by Gemco Electric in Clawson, as a metal fabricator, until he retired in 2000. In his younger years, he loved bowling, playing euchre, and going to auctions. Melvin enjoyed going to casinos, restaurants, driving all over the Thumb area roads, and attending various church events with Alicia. He was a master gardener, loved farming, and raising his chickens and geese.
Melvin is survived by his children: Emily (Greg) Darr, Michael Hoppe, Kevin Hoppe, Brian Hoppe, Hazel (Todd) Filion, Nadine (James) Kuntz, Matthew (Danielle) Hoppe, Mary (Larry) Randall, Janice (Brian) Williams, Tim (Beth) Hoppe, Arlene (Dan) Bozeman, John (Miranda) Hoppe, Sarah Medellin, Isabel (Keith) Fritz; thirty-nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; sister, Joanne Byrnes. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years, Alicia; his parents; grandson, Tristan Kuntz; granddaughter, Layla Schenk; son-in-law, Frank Medellin; daughter-in-law, Christine Hoppe; brothers: Patrick Hoppe, Donald Hoppe.
Funeral mass held 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2026 in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Good Shepherd Parish, Ubly with Rev. Yesu Mulakaleti officiating. Interment will be in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery, Unionville in the spring. Memorials may be made to Emily Darr to be used at the family’s discretion or the Alzheimer’s Association.
