WILLIAM NEIL MERCHANT,
81, of Cass City, died unexpectedly Friday, May 20, 2022 in Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital of Saginaw. He was born October 23, 1940, the fourth of five children born to Charles and Mary (Fletcher) Merchant in Cass City. He married Marlene "Cookie" Zawerucha on February 4, 1967 in St. Michael Catholic Church of Wilmot.
Bill graduated from Cass City High School in 1959. He served in the United State Air Force, as a weapons mechanic, from 1959 to 1963; during which time, he was stationed the longest in Okinawa, Japan. A hard-worker, Bill was a farmer most of his life. He enjoyed fishing on Lake Huron, in Caseville and Bay Port, and was a board member and past president of the Thumb Chapter Michigan Steelheaders Organization. Bill was also a member of the Caro Lodge No. 1049 Loyal Order of Moose. He was a loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather with a good sense of humor.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marlene; children: Daniel (Heather Pemble) Merchant of Cass City, Charles (Kristen) Merchant of Bay Village, OH; Heather (Rico) Triana of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren: Kevin (Kayla Jamieson) Merchant, James Merchant, Hoyt (Kristen Bell) Merchant, John “Jack” Merchant; great-grandchildren: Brayden Merchant, Owen Merchant, Brynn Merchant; sisters: Joyce (Clinton) Escilsen, Ruth (Gerald) Whittaker; brother, Allen Merchant; sister-in-law, Joan Merchant; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service held 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, 2022 in Kranz Funeral Home, Cass City with Sam Leppert, Funeral Service Celebrant officiating. Interment will be in Elkland Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Rawson Memorial Library of Cass City. Military honors under the direction of Cass City VFW Post #3644 and the U.S. Air Force.
